HISTORY OF THE HOODIE
Few fashion trends have been as remarkable as the hoodie. From its origins in medieval Europe to its powerful presence in today’s fashion world, the hoodie has become both a style icon and a statement. Looking back at the hoodie’s history—with roots in both sports and fashion—makes it easy to understand why this has long been an important element in many runners' wardrobes.
12th Century – The First Hoodie Clothing
The hoodie as clothing dates back to medieval Europe or even earlier. Monks wore tunics with hoods (known as "cowls"), and outdoor workers wore cloaks with hoods (known as "chaperons"). It is believed that the short cloak (or "capa") was imported to England in the 12th century during the Norman Conquest, as the cloak was particularly common in Normandy. The word "hoodie" originates from the Old English word "höd," which shares the same root as the word "hat."
1930s – The First Hoodie Sweatshirt
The American brand Champion apparently created the first hoodie in the 1930s. They switched to making sweatshirts after they had developed methods to sew thicker materials. Originally, hoods were added to sweatshirts to keep workers warm during the bitter winters of Upstate New York. Soon after, Champion provided sports sets, including hoodie sweatshirts, to the U.S. military for training exercises and physical education activities.
1976 – Rocky Gives the Hoodie Iconic Status
It was the grand drama film Rocky that truly gave the hoodie iconic status. The film, set in Philadelphia, tells the story of an untrained but good-hearted Italian-American amateur boxer, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), who gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. The film won three Oscars and is often considered the greatest sports drama film ever made. Since Rocky, the grey hoodie has appeared in iconic running scenes in other films, such as the classic thriller Marathon Man, and in TV shows like the political drama House of Cards.
1970s – Hoodies in Fashion and at Universities
Hip-hop culture developed in New York City in the 1970s, and American designer Norma Kamali was among the first designers to embrace the hoodie. Designers have put the hoodie on the catwalk ever since. Around the same time, universities began decorating hoodies with their names.
1990s – The Term "Hoodie" Was Invented
The term "hoodie" was first used in the 1990s. Unfortunately, the term took on a negative connotation after being associated with crime and some marginalized subcultures. In 2005, Bluewater Shopping Center in Kent banned shoppers wearing hoodies. Ironically, hoodies remained for sale in the stores there.
In July 2006, David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, gave a speech suggesting that hoodies were worn more for defensive than offensive purposes. The Labour Party parodied this speech with the slogan "hug a hoodie." This is one of many examples of how the hoodie—more than any other iconic clothing style—has sparked strong social, economic, and political ideas and feelings.
